Truly, June 30, 2016 was a date to remember for Filipinos as everyone–especially the netizens–celebrated the inauguration of the newly elected Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte and the annual worldwide event #SMDay or the Social Media Day, locally organized by @TweetupMNL, a volunteer community of active netizens who are united by their passion for social media.
Alongside #DU30onJune30, the 5th #SMDay’s theme #TayoPH topped national Twitter trends as various online communities, digital brands and netizens fervently tweeted about their excitement and optimism about the topics discussed and personalities featured in the largest social media event in the country held at the Samsung Hall of SM Aura Premier.

Sponsored by SM Supermalls, the country’s biggest mall network, #SMDay adapted the theme #TayoPH, which according to @TweetupMNL “stands as a clarion call to stand together as a people. To celebrate social media’s triumphs and recall its potential — harnessing social media’s strengths in bringing people together, in crossing boundaries, and merging divides.”
“It’s time to make the conversation positive and productive again,” Ros Juan, cofounder of @TweetupMNL shares. “We want to celebrate social media’s triumphs and recall its potential in making a meaningful impact in the lives of others.”

Included in the powerhouse array of speakers are Pompee La Viña, social media director of Duterte’s presidential campaign; Carlo Ople, Chief Digital Officer, Dentsu Digit, who surprised the crowd with his special guest–no less than social media superstar Maine “Yaya Dub” Mendoza; Gang Badoy of RockEd Philippines; Pratiksha Rao, Head-Media Partnerships SEA, Twitter; Janette Toral of DigitalFilipino; Michael Josh Villanueva of GadgetMatch; Vivian Tan, Camille Buhain, and Faye Condez of The Soshal Network; Thysz Estrada and Stefan Punongbayan; Ivorie Acosta, Cookie Bar Manila; Liz Lanuzo, Project Vanity; Jessica Nazarali, IT Girl Foundation; Vin Quilop, Art Director, McCann Worldgroup; Noelle Capili, Content Manager, Black Box Collab Inc.; Irish Dizon, among many others. Meanwhile, Soundcloud and Spoken Word artists, as well as members of Katipunan Improv performed during the event.
